Free Support Programme for Rural Businesses Launched

Rural businesses can create tenfold increases in their audience size, with digital marketing technologies like virtual reality and 360° video. That’s according to Digi2Market, an EU programme who today launched a new campaign offering free marketing and networking support to rural and small-scale businesses.

The campaign is also staging a #ruralbusiness day on social media on Wednesday 19th January. It was launched online on Monday 10th January 2022 by Mícheál Ó hÉanaigh, chief executive of Údarás na Gaeltachta.

“The #ruralbusiness day/lá #gnótuaithe – aims to highlight the role small businesses play in regional economies.  They provide employment and support sporting and community bodies. So, #ruralbusiness day/ lá #gnótuaithegives everyone a chance to show their appreciation for these rural entrepreneurs.”

“Rural businesses can feel isolated and find it hard to reach bigger markets. Digi2Market helps them use immersive technologies like VR and Augmented Reality to boost their marketing efforts and reach bigger audiences. It also offers them a way to connect and network online with businesses across Europe.”

Digi2Market programme co-ordinator, Seán Ó Coisdealbha of Údarás Na Gaeltachta, says any EU business is eligible to sign up to the programme. “However, our focus is on rural and small-scale businesses. We help them identify the latest technologies to market their business and put them into practice effectively. Lough Lannagh Holiday Village in Co Mayo, for example, witnessed an explosion of their Facebook traffic, simply by using 360° video.”

Media research expert, Dr Helen Jackson of the University of Ulster, a partner in the Digi2Market project, says the results have been impressive. “Mobile phone apps and immersive technologies can transform the way people engage with tourist attractions like Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demesne.”

“By linking physical and virtual spaces, visitors can explore the majestic clifftop location and discover the music, art, legends and stories of the people who lived there hundreds of years ago. And they do this with their phone in one hand and their feet firmly on the ground.

Digi2Market helped Finnish wellness service company Rantakylän Fysikaalinen Hoitolaitos (RFH) reach new audiences with a 360° Tour of their facilities. They also assisted them with the creation of an online store, which made it easier for customers to book and buy their services.

In Iceland, the Digi2Market partner is development agency SSNV. They collaborated with food processing company, Vörusmiðja Biopol, in a 360 virtual tour. “It gave potential customers a realistic visual idea on what to expect when they book food processing services,” says Sveinbjörg Rut Pétursdóttir of SSNV.

Dr Helen Jackson says Digi2Market is also about helping these small businesses to connect with other businesses across Europe. “We have created an online space for you to meet businesses in your sector and other sectors throughout the EU.”

Another key function of the Digi2Market campaign is to encourage small businesses to use more sustainable business practices. European expert, Dr Lasse Okkonen, Principal Lecturer at Karelia University in Finland – another Digi2Market partner – says using a Green Business Model is not just about helping the environment.

“Companies who apply environmental management systems and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) succeed better in public procurements of products and services. This is because they can better meet tightening environmental and responsibility criteria. In addition, enterprises applying green business models can better meet the expectations of stakeholders like industrial partners. They offer transparency on the environmental impact of everything they do to create a product or service.”

Small and rural businesses who want to sign up for free to the Digi2Market programme can do so directly from their website here.

How to use 360-up virtual tour marketing in healthcare

For healthcare services, creating a 360-up virtual tour can help in reaching potential clients and filling spaces in services.

Tervassalo is a rehab clinic located in Finland. The clinic specialises in substance abuse rehabilitation. Working with Digi2market partner, Karelia University of Applied Sciences, Tervassalo made their first move into 360-up virtual marketing.

Students at Karelia UAS created a 360-up virtual tour showcasing the facilities and atmosphere of Tervasslo.

How to use augmented reality in marketing

Using augmented reality (AR) in marketing isn’t confined to digital marketing. AR can also be used in print marketing.

Waahto Brewery is a small Finnish company. Dig2Market and our partner Karelia University of Applied Sciences worked with the brewery to use augmented reality in marketing.

The core marketing tool created was a tri-fold brochure. This can be set standing on pub tables in Finland. With support from marketing agency Digitoimisto Digitaali Oy, the brochure design included AR codes. These are linked to a range of amusing animated characters.

How to use Augmented Reality in the tourism industry

Do you know how to use Augmented Reality in the tourism industry? Where does an SME start? What are the possibilities? That’s where Dig2market comes in. We recently worked with Belfast-based, Big Motive, to design an immersive phone “app”. This transforms the way in which tourists experience Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demesne in Co. Derry/Londonderry.

Dig2market, alongside Big Motive and Ulster University, have created ‘History Space’. This is a phone app which uses augmented reality (AR) and geo-location technology. History Space enables the stories of these 18th-century buildings come alive in an immersive, interactive way.

360 degrees tours can help increase profits

Covid-19 has meant that many SMEs have lost footfall – but 360 degrees tours can help keep your business in profit.

With lockdowns and restrictions, as a business owner, you need to be thinking of how best to use digital marketing. Digi2Market supported Finnish wellness company Rantakylän Fysikaalinen Hoitolaitos (RFH) in creating a 360 degrees tour.

RFH offers physiotherapy and a gym. During covid-19 customers have been more concerned about hygiene. At times RFH had to close its doors.

Using 360s degrees tours – as a virtual tour – has enabled customers to see how RFH are keeping the premises as covid safe as possible. RFH have also launched an online shop and booking service.

The power of using even one 360 degrees photo in marketing

If you’re a sole trader, did you know that just one 360 degrees photo could transform your digital marketing?

TopGoaling Oy is a one-person HR consultancy and career coaching company. CEO Tero Vornanen works with a number of former professional athletes. Athletes can struggle to find a career direction following retirement from the sport.

Digi2Market joined up with students at the Karelia University of Applied Science to create an interactive 360 degrees photo. It shows Tero in conversation with two former professional Finnish athletes.

Raise brand awareness via Augmented Reality (AR) marketing

If you’re aiming to scale up on your brand awareness, Augmented Reality (AR) marketing can really boost your business.

Glenballyeamon Farm has been selling free-range eggs in Northern Ireland since 1997. Out There Eggs is owned by farmer Niall Delargy.

Niall wished to use augmented reality marketing (AR) to raise brand awareness. He wanted to use humour. He also wanted to leverage increasing concerns about animal welfare.

Digi2Market worked with Out There Eggs and comedian Shane Todd. The result was an amusing animated Augmented Reality marketing experience.
