When improving sustainability in product systems level, one can seek to reduce the impact of use of the product. During the use one can optimise energy efficiency, use cleaner energy sources, reduce the need for consumables, use cleaner consumables, and avoid the waste.

The initial lifetime use of the product is also important. Results can be achieved by producing reliable and durable products, modular products structures or improving the product maintenance and repair. Classic and attractive designs help to increase the lifetime of the product, and create stronger product-user relations.

Optimising end-of-life systems such as product reuse, remanufacturing, refurbishing, material recycling and utilisation as energy through incineration, are other common ways to reduce the environmental impact of the product.

One strategy is to develop new, more sustainable concepts. Those concepts can include reduction of the material use, replacing harmful materials and components with less harmful options and replacing products with services, if possible. One could also promote shared use of the products and integrate several functions in products or optimise functions in products.
