“Immersed in Media” is a set of learning resources to help teachers and pupils of A-Level Moving Image Arts (MIA) explore immersive media. The project supports teachers and pupils to explore the aesthetic similarities and tensions created by emerging media technology. The project has been designed as a structured lesson to supplement the core MIA curriculum and extend its scope. The project uses accessible technology (pupil’s mobile phones or school ipads), streaming platforms, and bespoke materials to help pupils explore the aesthetics of immersion and how new platforms can create new challenges and opportunities for creative storytelling.

The project has a full lesson plan coving health and safety, classroom management, pupil prompts, classroom tasks, custom built websites, an experimental introduction and framing videos developed by practitioners that have worked with immersive media for nearly 20 years. It is designed to help MIA teachers and pupils explore cutting edge approaches to storytelling and the forefront of media production.

Packs of learning resources have been posted to teachers across the country with printed copies of the lesson materials, 8 google cardboard for them to use with pupils, supporting learning resources, links to virtual tours, intro videos, and information packs for their pupils.

The project is open, accessible, and easy to implement for teachers. All equipment has been funded by Schools Engagement funds; so that the learning materials can be utilised by all schools, without barriers around cost, equipment or access. The materials are designed to extend the curricula past traditional film formats, and fold back into the school curricula innovations that are happening later in the educational journey for students wanting to progress into industry.

The project aims to:
<ul>
 	<li>Support teachers in exploring cutting edge media technologies by supplying materials, resources and equipment that is ready to use.</li>
 	<li>Challenge the pupils in their creative and analytical skills by creating resources that are student lead with prompts and questions.</li>
 	<li>Scaffold the learning between traditional film and immersive cinema by creating experimental materials to explore the similarities and tensions in an accessible way.</li>
 	<li>Promote innovation across the sector by supporting teachers with easy to follow materials and step-by-step instructions.</li>
 	<li>Create easy to use, easy to manage, and easy to implement classroom activities developed by experts.</li>
 	<li>Promote the facilities and resources, and raise the profile of  courses at Ulster University which have struggled to recruit due to location as a progression route for MIA graduates.</li>

MIA is a Northern Irish, specialist practical qualification developed in 2005 which develops critical and creative abilities in key creative areas of film production, including writing, directing, editing, producing and production design. MIA is the only qualification in digital filmmaking at these levels in the UK, and is designed to help young people develop their creative and critical abilities through hands-on learning in the craft of filmmaking. The qualification differs from Media Studies in its practical skills and its narrow focus on audiovisuals. As a region-specific qualification lacks the extensive classroom materials that other subjects such as Media Studies can draw on.

The subject is offered at 50 schools at GCSE, 100 at AS-Level and 76 at A-Level across the region and has been identified as contributing to the success of the TV and Film industries in Northern Ireland over the past 15 years but it has a narrow and targeted focus on traditional linear media forms.

This project affords lecturers from the university to fold cutting edge knowledge developed through the £13m FuturescreensNI and €2m NP&amp;A Program, back into earlier stages of the educational journey, and help support teachers and pupils in exploring new and emerging forms of storytelling.
